We watched a classic English film on the weekend. The Lady in the van, starring Maggie Smith as a homeless woman who lives in a van on the driveway of the playwright Alan Bennett, and stays there for 15 years.
On the surface, it seems a simple enough story, and it is well acted (especially Ms Smith), and is a heart warming story of two eccentrics.
I particularly liked the split characters of Alan Bennett; as the writer (airy fairy) and as the more realistic home owner. The film delves into the background of the character of Miss Shepherd (she was a nun and a pianist, among other things) and explores the unlikely friendship between a well connected playwright and a crotchety old woman.
It is funny, poignant, beautifully written – I loved it 🙂 4.5/5
