“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

What can we, as writers, photographers, artists, and bloggers learn from American inventor Thomas Alva Edison? Plenty, as it turns out. Edison is famous for many inventions, including the phonograph, a commercially viable lightbulb, and the motion picture camera.

His success resulted from trial and error, and many, many failed experiments before creating a lightbulb that could last 1200 hours, just as an example. He could have stopped. He could have given up. He chose to frame his work in a positive light:

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Edison’s philosophy is particularly compelling to anyone who does creative work:

Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety nine percent perspiration.

How many rough drafts, spoiled drawings, and blurry photos have you created before that stroke of serendipity? Are you looking at a…

Birdman

Have just watched Birdman with Michael Keaton. What a weird film. Not sure whether to love it or hate it. Will have to watch it again, methinks.:(

My children

Liam is 18 years old. He works 10 hours a week in a burger joint. He is in university studying a Bachelor of Arts in Popular Music. He is also the lead singer/lead guitarist of a band called The Vultures. They have a rock/blues sound and are writing, recording and demoing their music. There are three in the band – Joe on drums; Jay on bass; and Liam.

They have a following on the Gold Coast Australia (where we live). and have built up their gigs to be playing locally, plus NSW and Brisbane at least 2-3 times per week. Go see them – they’re awesome!

Jessica is 13 years old. She has just started High School. She has made lots of new friends and loves it Her friends include Mia, Shae and Sam. Her favorite subjects are Mathematics, Art and Science. She finds History boring, and dislikes PE.

Jess has lovely long blonde hair, and is into nails and fashion. She especially loves shoes and takes any chance she can to try on high heels. Her dream is to own British Doc Martens. She is One Direction’s ‘No 1 Fan’ and wants to visit Holmes Chapel in England to see where Harry Styles grew up. Go Harry ! 🙂

I love reading

I love reading sooo much !

It is my love of reading that has led me to want to write. 🙂

My favorite book (at the moment ) is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. It is a debut novel by an Australian author who wrote the story as part of her English thesis. It is the haunting story of Agnes who was convicted od killing her lover in 19th century Iceland. Agnes was also the last woman to be executed in Iceland.

It is beautifully written, with the descriptions of the Icelandic landscape – barren, cold, harsh; the poor conditions of the people living in meagre conditions in the crofts; the harsh treatment of Agnes as she waits for her execution in the police commissioner’s home.

I also loved a thriller by Michael Robotham. He is another Australian author who is well known. The thriller Life or Death tells the story of a man who escapes prison just one day shy of his actual release date. Why?

This is a fast paced story which left me gripped from the very start…well worth a read 🙂
